Global Islamic Studies: a Life(‘S) Lesson

March 21, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

The Event:

Through the Indian Ocean life of Sayyid Fadl Ibn Alawi (1824-1900) a multitude of worlds comes into view, some clear and some hazy. Oscillating between the clearly seen and the barely glimpsed, this paper defamiliarizes the study of the Islamic in relation to the global with the aim of rethinking concepts of sovereignty and life.

The Guest:

Wilson Chacko Jacob is Professor of History at Concordia University in Montréal. In addition to other publications, he is the author of two historical monographs. His first book, Working Out Egypt: Effendi Masculinity and Subject Formation in Colonial Modernity, 1870-1940 (Duke & AUC 2011), examines the global production of a regime of gender and sexuality mobilized in the service of nation building. His second book, For God or Empire: Sayyid Fadl and the Indian Ocean World (Stanford 2019), explores the relation of life to the global transformation of sovereignty through the lens of biography and through the recuperation of connected histories of the Middle East and South Asia.
