Russian Hajj: Empire and the Muslim Pilgrimage to Mecca

October 6, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Dr. Eileen Kane, Associate Professor of History, Connecticut College

“Russian Hajj: Empire and the Muslim Pilgrimage to Mecca”

By the late nineteenth century “Christian” Russia ruled more Muslims than the neighboring “Muslim” Ottoman Empire. This was the result of centuries of steady colonial expansion, much of it at Ottoman and Persian expense. How did Russia manage and govern its large Muslim populations? This lecture explores this question through the story of how and why Russia came to sponsor the hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.
